Sant Ferran
It was in Sant Ferran de ses Roques, San Fernando in Castilian, where tourism on Formentera began in the fifties of the last century. „Hippies“ and „nonconformists“ arrived by ferry from Ibiza on the so far unknown small island and enjoyed staying under the open sky on the marvellous, secluded beaches – due to the then lacking holiday accommodations. At that time, the Fonda da Pepe inn was the social centre where the „Formentera Myth“ that is still alive was born and also the alternative way of living is still cultivated in this beautiful tavern.
The friendly village is located ca. 2 km kilometer south of El Puchols in the island’s inner; it is ca. 3 km away from San Francesc. In the traffic-calmed village centre, away from the main street, around the 19th century built Esglèsia de Sant Ferran with its stone facade there is a lively hustle in the summer months until late in the evening. While a smaller “Hippie Market” on the slightly elevated plaza attracts its visitors in the mornings the village youth meets here in the evenings. Moreover, Sant Ferran provides for two further sights: The „Biblioteca International“, a collection of ca. 250000 books – among them almost the complete works of the hippie movement – having been collected by a Californian since 1967 and the allegedly only guitar craft school of the world having been founded by an East Frisian luthier in 1988 and offering a three-weeks class in the course of which you can build your own electronic guitar.
